Classical Cel Animation

2D Cel Animation is the oldest and the most popular and the oldest form of animation. Traditional animation is accomplished with a series of hand drawings with any medium that the cel can hold. The results can often be colourful and very life like, exciting and interesting.

Cel Animation is a technique in which the figures to be animated are drawn and painted on cels, placed over a background, and photographed frame by frame. A cel (short for celluloid) is a blank clear plastic sheet used by an artist to paint an animated character or object based on the animator's original pencil drawing. The cels are then placed over a background and photographed in sequence to produce an illusion of life in the completed film or cartoon. You can work from pen and paper, then scan in your work for final ink and paint, and composite. You can optionally work entirely inside the program, using a drawing tablet and the build in tools like onion skin and the exposure sheet. Today however, cells are often painted on a computer, and even the drawing process is starting to transition to computers. Nowadays the cel artist uses animation softwares to do what would normally take hours to do by hand. These softwares handle more than just inks and gives a clean look as compared to inking by hand.

The most important thing to be an animator is the Visualization. You should have the power to visualize anything from different angles. Then the next important thing is the ability to draw what you have visualized.

Typically, we should convey the story where something actually happens. There should be a beginning of the animation with an introduction to the character, a middle and an end. This can take the length feature film or a small clip.

We develop a storyboard to help us plan out animation scenes. Our expert cel animators draw on paper and then scan into a series of frames. We can even draw with a tablet right inside the program to bring smooth animation quality.

In a 2D cel animation, artists and illustrators need great observational powers and conceptual visualization skills to create perfect shaped character interpolated movements at 2D level. With the use of computers entering the animation field, it is now possible to scan the outline drawings and fill it in with digital paint.
